Hi, hope you are having an awesome time. You know, a multimeter is the first cool tool you are introduced to when you start learning electronics. It is the most fundamental tool and, in my opinion, you just cannot go with electronics without learning or having a decent multimeter. Why? Because, depending on your every electronics project, you will have to measure resistances, voltages (car batteries voltages), currents, inductances, capacitances and check the continuity. However, getting a decent best multimeter for beginners can be a tricky task. You as a beginner may not know what parameters you should look for in a multimeter. To help you with this tricky task, in this post I try my knowledge best to give you the best beginner multimeter.
It is very hard to predict what is one’s actual problem and for what purpose you need a multimeter. Here, I just try to make the selection of best multimeter for beginners very straight forward. I give you my personal three insanely best models, one for those beginners who are just started with electronics and just want to play with it for little time as hobby, second for those beginners who are serious with it and want to take electronics to further next levels, third is for those beginners who are going to measure AC voltages/currents i.e. electrician mind beginners. Hopefully, you will find this post helpful and enjoy reading it.

The Best Beginner Multimeter in 2018
A multimeter gives you the power to troubleshoot or measure various components values and ratings for the designing of your electronics projects. It is the combination of Ammeter, Voltmeter, Resistance meter, and sometime Capacitance meter. It may also have continuity and transistor gain calculation feature, but these are the features not the sole purposes of a meter. So, don’t be impressed with these extra attractive features, professional meters don’t have them.
Now, coming toward the main topic. The best multimeter that I recommend for beginners is either AstroAI AW33D, or AstroAI WH5000A, or FLuke 117 Electricians True RMS Multimeter. These are the best beginner digital multimeters because they have a proven track record, come from trusted brands with one or more than one year warranty, give accurate results, safe and reliable, decent looking, well packed, and yet they have very low price tags that everyone can afford. I personally love them all and want you to have a look at them and decide yourself the best for you according to your requirements.
In the rest of the article, I give more information about the said models and also provide some parameters guidelines which you should see in a multimeter before buying it.
1. The Beginner Multimeter For Newbies Or Home Use
From electronics newbies, I mean those people who have just started playing around with basic electronics or having the intention for some electronics troubleshooting and maybe they are not very frequent users of a multimeter. As far as my thinking goes, they don’t need any high budget multimeter as their entire activities are measuring resistances, small DC voltages/currents, maybe limited main AC voltages. I am saying this because when I was in engineering junior year and before that when I just play with electronics as a hobby, my activities were all around basic electronics. And I just have a very basic multimeter under $30 which was very fine at that time. By the way, you can see that multimeter in my this post, where I change its battery. I still love it too, as I have a lot of memories attached to it.
Coming toward my recommended multimeter for electronic hobbyists i.e. AsrtoAI AW33D (Amazon link). This cool device is enough for your all basic kinds of stuff. You can use it to troubleshoot your automotive and all home electrical problems. It can measure everything like resistances, AC/DC voltages, currents, continuity, and yet comes with one year warranty and a price tag of below $10.
Remember, this is a very basic multimeter. Never play with main AC voltages without double checking the probe connections. If you mistakenly measure AC current and your probes are in DC current terminals, you will end in blowing your multimeter and maybe harm yourself. Besides this, it cannot measure capacitances and not an auto range one. Which is very fine, who wants to measure capacitance when it is already written on its body (measuring capacitance with a multimeter is done in most cases for capacitor testing), and auto-ranging feature makes it costly which no manufacturer will willing to design if they are designing it for a complete electronics beginner.
2. The Beginner Multimeter for Students Or Hobbyists Or DIYers
This category represents most of the people reading this article, searching for a decent meter that would help them solve their almost every day to day problem, as a multimeter is the most important tool in their life. For such group of students or electronics hobbyists, the best multimeter, in my opinion, is either the AstroAI WH5000A (Amazon link) or Extech EX330 (Amazon). I will go for the later one, as it has a decent resistance range of 0.1 to 40 MOhms.
My preferred features in the multimeter for this category and as well as for below awesome people are, it must be auto-range (To save you time and give you extra accuracy), must be capable of measuring micro, milli range currents, must have CAT II, III safety (To know more these standards click here), high quality internal fuse, temperature measurement (useful for to check for components overheating), and non contact voltage testing.
You know, as hobbyists or student you cannot really predict the requirements of any electronics project. One project will need you a multimeter to just measure some resistor values and voltage drops, the other may require other measurements, and the list goes on. So, you need a complete package and the mentioned models have got everything for you. They have all the features I mentioned above.
3. The Beginner Multimeter for Electrician
When playing around with AC voltages or any high voltage levels, safety is always the first priority. They are very dangerous and a multimeter designed for such measurements must have safety features. And I think, as an electrician, you will encounter with high currents and voltages to learn and grow your knowledge of repairing and troubleshooting.
Sorry to say but you have to buy a decent one. I don’t think there is a beginner or expert level multimeter for people like you. So grab yourself a Fluke 117 Electricians True RMS Multimeter (Amazon link). It is safe and it would be your first and last one. I am so confident about the fluke brand that it would also compensate for your early silly mistakes.
I don’t know but the word electrician makes in my mind, the imagination of a person doing something with high voltages and he has the intention for some industry work. If you an electrician beginner, for you I don’t care for anything in multimeter except the safety, and the fluke brand provides this their knowledge best. Don’t waste your money on a cheap one as it may seem cheap but it can harm you if you don’t play safe.
There Are Other Great Options Available
Of course, there is a lot of other options one can search for. But please don’t buy an analog meter unless and until you have a very solid reason for it. Personally, I think it is always a good idea to adapt oneself with the current technology. There was time for analog devices but now we are living in modern digital word and we should learn to appreciate it.
Above all are the best multimeters for beginners I could choose giving my knowledge best. But if you have a long-term planning for electronics and have a decent budget. I would suggest buy a multimeter that will be on your side for your entire life. I said for entire life based on my trust and confidence in the fluke brand.
What is a Multimeter?
I am supposing you all already know what a multimeter is, but for some unknown reasons, I feel I should discuss it a little bit here. Basically, a multimeter is a device which is used by the electrician, electronics engineers or other awesome people to measure resistances, voltages (if you want to know how a multimeter measure voltage check my this cool article), currents (Amps), capacitances (Farads), continuity and sometimes inductances. It can also be used for diode testing, transistor testing and for its three terminals identifications. A lot of people use it to troubleshot their design circuits or other printed circuit boards. So, you can also mention it as circuit troubleshooting device.
Parameters to look for in a beginner Oscilloscope
For complete beginners following parameters really don’t matter that much. I bought my first multimeter just keeping in mind, it should be stylish, can measure voltages and resistances. That all I wanted in my multimeter. This is with time I learned which parameter plays a key role in certain measurement.
Following are the parameters you should at least go through if you are planning for a serious multimeter. And you are not like me to upgrade your meter as you progress.
1. Input Impedance
By input impedance, I actually mean the input total resistance the multimeter provide to the measuring component or circuit. The higher the input impedance the better is the multimeter.
These are very important and almost no one pay attention to it. When buying a multimeter people look for what can it measure but they miss the important thing from what range to what range it can exactly measure that parameter very accurately.
See the following video if you really want to know about the parameter in much greater detail.
This is all that I want to share about the best beginner multimeters that you buy on Amazon right away. Let me tell something, my personal approach to buying anything is to first look for the brand with a proven track record. You can take me as a brand follower person. When I am done with brand research I then look for people reviews and try to figure what problems they were facing and how the product helped them. But to be honest, I don’t care for reviews that much as I do for a brand reputation. And I just followed the same mindset with these multimeters, and I am confident they are best for beginners, to the best of my knowledge.
I didn’t make any table showing parameters of every model I talked about, because I think you would clearly see them on their respective Amazon pages. There is no need to copy and paste them here.
Hopefully, I have helped you somehow and you have enjoyed making up to this far end.
